Autumn in Gangwon (2026): East Coast Trails, Coffee, Sunrise
Two scenic east-coast routes from Seoul. Nami Island gold tunnels, Gangneung coffee culture, Jeongdongjin sunrise — with verified 2026 KTX times and ferry prices.

Gangwon's east coast has Korea's cleanest air and the country's most rewarded autumn scenery — clearer skies than Seoul, sea on one side and mountains on the other. Two routes here, both doable as a single overnight from the capital. Foliage peak runs late October through the second week of November in central Gangwon, and a week earlier at higher elevations like Mount Seorak.
Route A — slow train to Nami Island
The ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan Station reaches Chuncheon in about 75 minutes for ₩8,600 — a beautiful river-valley ride that locals call the slow-train escape. Connect onward to Gapyeong Wharf by Gapyeong city bus or taxi (15 minutes from Gapyeong Station, the closer alternative to Chuncheon for Nami access). The ferry to Nami Island plus admission costs ₩16,000 and includes return passage; ferries run every 10–20 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.
On the island itself, half-day walks under the metasequoia tunnels turn gold in late October — the iconic shot is the central avenue at 4 p.m. when light filters horizontally. Add a stop at the Garden of Morning Calm (15 minutes by shuttle from Gapyeong) for evening illumination during the autumn lighting festival, typically opening early November.

Route B — Jeongdongjin sunrise and Gangneung coffee
Jeongdongjin Station is a 5-minute walk to the sea-facing platform that Korean dramas made famous; the sunrise rises directly above the rails between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. in autumn. From Seoul, take the KTX Gyeonggang line to Gangneung Station (about 2 hours, ₩28,000) and transfer to a local KORAIL train down the coast (30 minutes). Gangneung's reputation for coffee is real — Anmok Beach Coffee Street has 30+ roasteries within a 1km stretch, two of which (Terarosa, Bohemian) launched the Gangneung coffee movement.
For an overnight that combines both, take the last KTX to Gangneung (arrives around 10 p.m.), sleep in central Gangneung, then take the 5:30 a.m. local train to Jeongdongjin for sunrise. Coffee at Anmok Beach by 9 a.m., back in Seoul by lunchtime via the KTX. For longer stays, Sokcho gives access to Mount Seorak and seafood markets just 90 minutes north by intercity bus.
Gangwon east-coast loop
Practical — transport, weather, and timing
KTX Gyeonggang line Seoul→Gangneung: 2 hours, ~₩28,000. ITX-Cheongchun Yongsan→Chuncheon: 75 min, ~₩8,600. Within Gangwon, intercity buses connect along the coast but run hourly outside peak hours; rental cars give the most freedom. Foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued before arrival — Korea does not issue IDPs locally. Roads in Gangwon are well-paved but mountain passes have tight switchbacks; budget extra time on rainy days.
Autumn 2026 tips
- Foliage peak: last week of October through second week of November (mid-October at Mount Seorak above 800m).
- Pack a wind layer — east coast can be 5°C cooler than Seoul, with strong sea wind year-round.
- Rural bus schedules tighten after 7 p.m. Check last-bus times in Naver Map before committing to a dinner plan.
- Nami Island ferry runs every 10–20 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to sunset; queues build after 11 a.m. on weekends.
- Korail Pass (foreign passport only) covers KTX + ITX unlimited for 3 or 5 days — worth it for two regions in one trip.
- Gangneung coffee shops open earliest at 7 a.m.; Terarosa main store offers 11 a.m. roasting tours by reservation.
Is Nami Island worth it outside autumn?
Spring cherry blossoms (early April) and summer evenings (golden hour at 7 p.m.) are also lovely, but the autumn gold tunnels are the iconic photograph and attract the most visitors. Winter has dusted-snow scenery but ferries close earlier.
Can I see the Jeongdongjin sunrise in one night from Seoul?
Yes. Take the last KTX to Gangneung (arrives ~10 p.m.), sleep in central Gangneung, take the 5:30 a.m. local train (or taxi for ₩30,000) to Jeongdongjin. Sunrise is between 6:30–7:00 a.m. in autumn. Back in Seoul by late morning is realistic.
Do I need a car in Gangwon?
For a 1–2 day coast loop, KTX + intercity bus + occasional taxi works fine. For Mount Seorak, Pyeongchang ski area, or off-coast hiking trails, a rental car saves significant time. International Driving Permit must be issued in your home country before travel.
What is the best photo time at Nami Island?
The metasequoia avenue glows brightest at 3:30–4:30 p.m. as light filters horizontally. Cherry blossom avenue is best 9–10 a.m. with side light. The pine path is consistently photogenic mid-day.
