T-money vs Climate Card — which is better for foreign tourists 2026

Two transit cards dominate Seoul travel in 2026: T-money (the classic prepaid card, used since 2004) and Climate Card (Seoul's monthly unlimited pass, launched January 2024). Foreign tourists ask which to buy almost daily — the answer depends on trip length and how much you'll move within Seoul. This is the side-by-side breakdown with break-even math.

Climate Card — for stays of 5+ days

Climate Card (₩65,000 / 30 days unlimited) covers Seoul subway, city buses, and Ttareungyi public bikes. Plus version (₩65,000 + ₩5,000) adds Ttareungyi bikes. Available at any Seoul subway vending machine. Foreign passport not required. The math: a single subway ride is ₩1,400; you break even at 47 rides. With Seoul's typical tourist density (subway/bus 5-7x daily), break-even hits at day 7-9. So Climate Card wins for 5+ day stays where you commute multiple times.

T-money — for shorter stays or non-Seoul trips

T-money (₩2,500-3,000 card + top-up) is more flexible: pay-per-ride, works in Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, Daegu, Incheon, and most other Korean cities. Pays for subway, buses, taxis, and convenience-store purchases. Top up at any subway vending machine in increments of ₩1,000. T-money still gives a 100won discount per ride compared to single-ride tickets. Pick T-money if your trip includes Busan or Jeju, or if you're in Seoul under 4 days.

Break-even math and recommendation

Quick math: Climate Card breaks even at 47 subway rides (₩65,000 / ₩1,400 = 46.4). At 5 subway rides + 2 bus rides daily (Seoul tourist average), you hit 47 rides on day 7. So Climate Card wins for 7+ day Seoul-only stays. T-money wins for shorter stays and multi-city trips. WOW Pass (issued at Incheon Airport) combines T-money + foreign-currency exchange + debit card; better for travelers who don't want a separate forex booth visit.

Transit card tips

  • WOW Pass at Incheon Airport: T-money + currency exchange + debit. Best for hassle-free arrivals.
  • Climate Card vending machines: Subway stations Line 5 City Hall, Line 4 Myeongdong, Line 9 Gangnam.
  • Refund: T-money has unused balance refund minus ₩500 service fee (any vending machine). Climate Card non-refundable.
  • Bus drivers prefer T-money — paper tickets/single-ride taps are slower.
  • Climate Card cannot be used outside Seoul Metro area; T-money can.
  • Ttareungyi bike: 1 hour free with regular T-money (₩1,000), unlimited with Climate Card Plus.
Can I have both T-money and Climate Card?

Yes — they're separate cards. Many travelers use Climate Card for Seoul daily transit and T-money for trips outside Seoul (Busan, Jeju, intercity bus). Both work simultaneously.

Where do I refund a T-money card?

Any subway vending machine in Korea — refunds your remaining balance minus a ₩500 service fee. Take your physical card to the machine; it processes in 30 seconds.

Does Climate Card work for KTX or intercity bus?

No — Climate Card only covers Seoul Metro subway and city buses. KTX, intercity bus, and intercity train use separate ticketing (Korail Talk app).

What about WOW Pass?

WOW Pass combines T-money + foreign-currency exchange + Korean debit card. Issued at Incheon Airport (3 desks at Terminal 1). Excellent for travelers who want one card for everything; rates are slightly worse than Myeongdong booths but the convenience offsets.
