Why go
Wanggung-ri Archaeological Site is a UNESCO World Heritage palace site in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, the partly excavated remains of an early-7th-century Baekje royal palace built under King Mu. The compound — once a moated royal residence with audience halls, a five-story stone pagoda, gardens, and Buddhist worship buildings — survives today as foundation stones, the pagoda itself, and a thoughtful museum that uses original artifacts to reconstruct daily court life. The pagoda has stood on this exact site for over 1,300 years and is one of Korea's earliest stone pagodas. The site is part of the Baekje Historic Areas UNESCO inscription. Allow about two hours. Pair with Mireuksa Temple Site nearby.
