Arirang Literature Museum

Arirang Literature Museum in Gimje, Jeollabuk-do, is a dedicated museum on the epic 12-volume Korean novel "Arirang" (published 1994-2004) by novelist Jo Jung-rae — one of the most-cited works of modern Korean historical fiction, covering the Korean experience through the 1910-1945 Japanese colonial period through the Korean War. The novel is regarded as one of the definitive Korean historical epics and has been included in the standard Korean-literature curriculum since its completion. The museum walks visitors through Jo Jung-rae's writing process (including his multi-year research across Manchuria, Japan, and mainland Korea), the historical context of the novel's period coverage, the specific Gimje-region setting that grounds much of the narrative (Gimje's rice-paddy country was historically one of Korea's most-cited colonial-era agricultural exploitation regions), and the broader Jo Jung-rae bibliography which also includes "Taebaek Mountains" (another major historical epic).
