National Asian Culture Center

Asia Culture Center in central Gwangju is one of Korea's most significant modern-culture complexes, built on the site of the former South Jeolla Provincial Hall — the exact building where the 1980 Gwangju Uprising's civilian resistance staged its final stand before the military crackdown on May 27, 1980. The complex, opened in 2015 after a 10-year construction, deliberately preserves parts of the original Provincial Hall building alongside its new cultural infrastructure, making the site both a working contemporary arts complex and a memorial to the pro-democracy movement. The center's five sub-facilities include the Culture Creation Center (studios and workshops), the Cultural Exchange Center (rotating exhibitions on Asian contemporary culture), the Cultural Promotion Center (performance halls and event spaces), the Children's Cultural Center, and the ACC Archive & Research Center. Programming ranges from major contemporary-art exhibitions and international performance festivals to specific memorial-related exhibitions on the May 18 Democratic Movement. Most exhibitions and grounds free; select premium exhibitions ticketed. Allow at least 3 hours. Access: 5-minute walk from Culture Complex Station (Line 1, Exit 4). Pair with the May 18 National Cemetery, the Gwangju Museum of Art (batch 7 verified), and the Chungjang-ro shopping district (batch 6 verified K-pop street) for a full Gwangju cultural-and-history day.
