Why go
Saseongam is a small Buddhist hermitage perched on a cliff at the southern slope of Jirisan in Gurye, Jeollanam-do, traditionally founded in the 4th century CE during the Baekje period and revered as one of Korea's earliest Buddhist hermitages. The hermitage is small in scale but visually striking — perched on the cliff face with the small main hall, side prayer halls, and monks' quarters arranged on multiple stone platforms cut into the cliff. The cliff-side location provides commanding open views back across the surrounding Gurye-area landscape, and the steep approach trail itself is part of the visit experience. The hermitage's distinctive cliff-face setting and ancient origins have made it one of Jirisan's most-cited Buddhist destinations. Best paired with broader Jirisan-area itineraries.
