Why go

Maninuichong (Tomb of Ten Thousand Patriots) is a public memorial site in Korea dedicated to the mass burial of approximately ten thousand Korean civilians who died defending the city against the Japanese invasion during the 1597 Battle of Namwon — one of the most catastrophic engagements of the Imjin War for the Korean civilian population. After the city fell to Japanese forces, the bodies of the defenders were collected and buried together in a single mass grave that became the maninuichong. The site preserves the original burial mound, a memorial shrine where descendants and the local community continue to hold annual jesa rites, and interpretive panels covering the broader Imjin War context and the civilian-resistance dimension of the conflict. Best for travelers interested in Imjin War civilian history.
