Why go
Soswaewon is one of Korea's most-celebrated traditional Joseon-era gardens, set in a wooded valley in Damyang, Jeollanam-do. Originally built in the early 16th century by the scholar Yang San-bo as a private garden of literary-and-philosophical retreat after the political turmoil of the early Joseon court, Soswaewon is widely regarded as the most refined surviving example of Joseon Confucian-scholar garden design. The compound includes the Jewoldang and Gwangpunggak pavilions, stone-paved courtyards, a flowing stream that runs through the garden, and densely planted bamboo and old-growth pine. The garden's design embodies the late-Joseon Neo-Confucian aesthetic of integrating built architecture with natural landscape rather than imposing geometric form. Best paired with Damyang's Metasequoia Road and Juknokwon bamboo forest.
