칠백의총
임진왜란(1592) 당시 1만 5천의 왜군과 싸우다가 수적 열세였지만 적에게 큰 타격을 입히고 장렬히 전사한 700 의승병들의 유해를 모신 호국영령의 성지이다
Why go
Chilbaegui-chong is the official mass-grave memorial mound for the Seven Hundred Patriots, the volunteer civilian-and-monk militia led by Joseon-era scholar Jo Heon and the warrior-monk Yeonggyu who died at the Second Battle of Geumsan in August 1592 during the Imjin War. Outnumbered roughly ten to one by the Japanese invasion force, the militia chose to fight to the death rather than retreat, and the bodies were buried together in a single tumulus that became the chilbaegui-chong ("Tomb of Seven Hundred Patriots"). The site preserves the original mound, a memorial shrine (Chilbaegui-chong Sa) where annual jesa rites are still held, and an interpretive museum on the broader Imjin War context. Best for travelers interested in Korean civil-resistance history and pairs naturally with broader Geumsan and Daejeon-area itineraries.
