Why go

Baraebong is a 1,165-meter peak on the eastern flank of Jirisan in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, famous for one of the most dramatic spring azalea blooms in Korea. From late April through mid-May, the broad summit ridge — which once served as a sheep pasture — turns into a sea of magenta-pink rhododendron sweeping across open grassland. The bloom forms one of Korea's most photographed mountain scenes, drawing hikers from across the country. The hike up from Unbongmyeon village takes about three hours one way at moderate difficulty. Outside azalea season, the open ridgeline still gives sweeping Jirisan views in any direction. Reservations recommended for the peak bloom weekend. Pair with Jirisan Noryukcheong skywalk.
