Why go

Chiryeon Valley in Muju is a 4-kilometer stream-cut valley on the eastern slopes of Deogyusan National Park, named for its seven ("chil") successive falls and pools ("yeon") that step down the granite bedrock. Less visited than the better-known Gucheongdong valley to the south, Chiryeon offers similar granite-and-pine scenery in a quieter setting. The trail follows the stream up at a gentle gradient, with each falls reachable on a short side path. The full walk takes about two hours one way at easy difficulty. Best in summer for cold-water soaking and autumn for foliage. Reachable by car from Muju town, then a short walk from the trailhead parking. Pair with the wider Deogyusan trails or Muju Resort.
