Chungjang-ro Street (충장로)

Chungjang-ro Street is the major shopping-and-pedestrian street in central Gwangju's downtown area, set as one of Korea's longest-established downtown shopping districts and the historic commercial center of Gwangju. The street runs through central Gwangju with a long stretch of fashion-and-clothing retailers, cosmetics shops, restaurants, casual food vendors, and the broader downtown shopping mix that characterizes major Korean city downtown areas. The street has long historical significance as the main downtown gathering point during the Gwangju Uprising of May 1980 — a major democratization-movement event that became one of the foundational reference points for South Korean democratic transition. Today the street remains the central shopping destination for Gwangju area residents and visitors. Best in late afternoon and evening hours.
