Why go

Daeheungsa is a major Buddhist mountain temple at the foot of Mt. Duryunsan in Haenam, Jeollanam-do, founded in the early Silla period and inscribed as part of UNESCO's Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries of Korea (2018) — the seven temple sites that together represent Korea's living mountain-monastery tradition. Daeheungsa is the spiritual home of the late-Joseon monk Cho-ui, the major figure in the Korean Buddhist tea-ceremony revival, and the temple still functions as a key site for Korean Buddhist tea-culture transmission. The compound spreads across a long valley, with multiple halls including Daeungbojeon, Cheonbuljeon, the famed northern compound (Bukmiryeokjeon), and the surrounding monks' quarters and meditation huts. The wider Mt. Duryunsan natural setting — old-growth forest, mountain stream, and ridge walks — is part of the visit. Best given a half-day, ideally with a tea-ceremony experience.
