Dongdaemun History & Culture Park

Dongdaemun History & Culture Park sits on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium (built 1925 as Korea's first modern sports stadium, demolished 2007-2008), and combines a museum, archaeological excavation viewing platforms, and the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) by architect Zaha Hadid (completed 2014). The excavation revealed a Joseon-era city wall section (part of the original Hanyangdoseong wall that once surrounded Seoul) and military training grounds, now displayed in glass-floored sections of the park. By night the DDP's silver curving shell glows under LED rose installations during seasonal events (the LED Rose Garden peaks in late April to May), and the surrounding Dongdaemun district — Seoul's most-cited late-night shopping district with wholesale fashion markets open past midnight — extends the visit into an evening. The combined site is a study in layered Seoul: defense wall, modern stadium, contemporary architecture, all within 100 meters.
