Why go

Dongdaemun History & Culture Park sits on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium, demolished in 2008, and combines a museum, archaeological excavation viewing platforms, and the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) by architect Zaha Hadid. The excavation revealed a Joseon-era city wall section and military training grounds, now displayed in glass-floored sections of the park. By night the DDP's silver curving shell glows under LED rose installations during seasonal events. The combined site is a study in layered Seoul: defense wall, modern stadium, contemporary architecture, all in 100 meters. Free to walk; museum and DDP exhibitions ticketed. Pair with Dongdaemun Market and Cheonggyecheon stream.
