Why go

Eocheongdo is a small remote island about 80 kilometers off the western coast of Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do — one of Korea's most isolated populated islands and a famous landfall for spring and autumn migratory birds. About 600 species of birds have been recorded passing through, drawing serious birders from across East Asia. The single inhabited village of around 200 residents maintains a fishing-based way of life largely unchanged for decades. Visitor lodging is limited to a few family-run minbak. Ferry from Gunsan takes about 2.5 hours and runs once or twice a day depending on season; weather cancellations are frequent. Best for birding in May and October. Plan minimum two nights given the ferry timing.
