Gangcheonsan County Park

Gangcheonsan County Park is a public mountain park in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, one of the more atmospheric small mountain parks in southwestern Korea — set on the low granite peaks of Gangcheonsan with a network of hiking trails, dramatic granite cliff formations, and the historic Gangcheon Buddhist temple that gives the mountain its cultural anchor. The park's signature attraction is the Gangcheon Rock (Gangcheonbawi) — a large freestanding granite pillar rising sharply from the forest floor and one of the most-photographed rock formations in the Jeollabuk mountain landscape. Multiple marked hiking trails traverse the park, ranging from a 90-minute Gangcheonsa temple-approach loop to a 4-hour full ridge traverse. The park's specific granite geology (isolated pillars, cliff overhangs, boulder-fields) gives it a visual character distinct from the more common forested-slope Korean mountain parks. Modest park admission. Best in autumn (mid-October to early November) for foliage color layered over the granite formations, or spring (April) for azaleas. Allow at least half a day. Access: about 40 minutes from Sunchang town by car.
