Why go

Gangneung Coffee Street is the cluster of independent specialty cafes lining the seaside road of Anmok Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon. The strip's reputation grew out of the 1980s when one of Korea's first specialty coffee roasters opened here, and over the decades dozens more have followed — most still independently owned and roasting their own beans. The combination of pour-overs and the wide, blue East Sea right at the cafe doorstep made Gangneung the unofficial coffee capital of Korea. Each cafe has its own style; locals usually walk the street and pick by mood. Best at sunrise. Pair with the Gyeongpo Beach lake walk or Ojukheon Confucian site for a full Gangneung day.
