Why go

Myeongju-dong is the historic core of old Gangneung — narrow lanes once lined with the city's largest concentration of tile-roofed houses and brick mid-century buildings, now reborn as a slow-renovation cafe and culture district. Most of the buildings are kept at original scale and hand-restored rather than demolished, which gives the area an unusually genuine layer of mid-20th-century atmosphere. Independent cafes, small bookstores, hanok-restored guesthouses, and a couple of tiny art spaces fill the lanes. Best on weekday afternoons. Pair with Gangneung Coffee Street, Gyeongpo Beach, and the Ojukheon historic complex for a full multi-decade Gangneung day.
