Why go

Gochangeupseong is a complete Joseon-era walled town fortress in northern Jeollabuk-do, distinguished by the 1.7-kilometer earth-and-stone wall that still rings the entire compound. Inside the wall, restored magistrate's offices, granaries, and quarters give a sense of how a fortified administrative town actually functioned. The signature local tradition is the autumn "Dapseong-nori" — circling the wall three times while balancing a flat stone on the head, which legend says wards off ill fortune. It's a uniquely participatory experience for a fortress visit. Allow about ninety minutes for a full circuit and the inner buildings. Pair with the dolmen sites of Gochang for a UNESCO-themed full day.
