Goyang West Five Royal Tombs [UNESCO World Heritage]

Goyang Seooreung (West Five Royal Tombs) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do — one of the 40 Joseon Royal Tombs jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2009. The Seooreung complex clusters five royal tomb groups from the middle Joseon period in a single wooded compound, including the tombs of Kings Sukjong, Yeongjo, and their queens and consorts, alongside the tombs of several princes and princesses. Each individual tomb follows the standard Joseon royal-tomb layout — the outer stone spirit-road (holy path), the T-shaped ceremonial hall (jeongjagak), and the domed grave mound on a raised earthen platform — with subtle variations that reflect the specific reign context. The wooded parkland setting (about 1.83 million square meters) is deliberately preserved as natural forest, giving the site both cultural-heritage and ecological-park character. Modest entrance fee (KRW 1,000). Allow at least 2 hours for a focused visit; a full circuit of all five tomb groups takes 3-4 hours. Bilingual Korean/English signage. Access: 20-minute walk from Yeokchon Station (Line 6, Exit 2).
