Gyeryongsan National Park

Gyeryongsan National Park is a substantial national park spanning Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon, centered on Gyeryongsan mountain (845m) — one of Korea's most spiritually significant mountains in traditional Korean geomancy (pungsu-jiri) and Buddhist practice. The mountain's shape has been read for centuries as a rooster head with a dragon body (from which "gye" chicken + "ryong" dragon), a specific configuration that traditional Korean geomancers regarded as one of Korea's most auspicious mountain forms. The park hosts several significant Buddhist temples including Donghaksa (an active nunnery on the eastern flank, adjacent to Donghaksagyegok Valley — batch 1 verified), Gapsa Temple on the western flank (another major working temple), and multiple smaller hermitages. Marked hiking trails range from gentle temple-loop walks to a full summit traverse (about 5-6 hours) with the Donghaksa-to-Gapsa cross-mountain hike being one of the more-cited multi-hour Korean temple-pilgrimage walks. Spring azaleas along the upper slopes (peak mid to late April), autumn foliage (mid-October to early November), and dense summer canopy shade give the park a full four-season character.
