Hoemunsan National Recreational Forest

Hoemunsan National Recreational Forest is a Korea Forest Service-managed mountain forest in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, on the slopes of Hoemunsan (837 m). The forest is one of the more rugged national recreational forests in the southwestern Korean mainland, with a network of trails ranging from gentle stream walks (30-60 minutes) to a four-hour summit ascent that gains about 700 meters of elevation from the base station. Cabin and dormitory accommodations are bookable through the Forest Service portal (foresttrip.go.kr) — typically 3 months in advance, with summer weekends filling within minutes of booking open, and the forest's elevation gives it noticeably cooler air through the summer months (5-8°C below the valley). The site also holds a small museum on the Korean War partisan activity that occurred in the surrounding ridges — Hoemunsan was one of the more contested guerrilla-warfare areas in southwestern Korea during and after the 1950-53 war. Reservations essential. Best in summer for cool air, autumn for foliage (mid-October to early November), or early winter for the quiet mountain atmosphere before snow. Pair with the Sunchang Gochujang Folk Village (30 minutes south) — the town is the traditional center of Korean red-pepper-paste production — and the broader Jeollabuk countryside for a slow-food-and-forest day.
