Why go

Hwahongmun Gate is one of the major water-gates of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage), set on the northern stretch of the fortress wall where the Suwoncheon Stream flows through the city wall. The gate combines a working seven-arch stone water-arch with the main gate-tower wooden pavilion above it, designed both as a functional water-gate allowing the stream to pass through the fortress wall and as a defensive position against attackers. The gate's distinctive design — combining stone water-arches with a wooden gate-tower — is one of the most architecturally distinguished features of Suwon Hwaseong's fortification system. The seven-arch stone water-gate reflects the engineering sophistication of the late-Joseon-era Hwaseong project. Best paired with the broader Suwon Hwaseong Fortress wall walk.
