Hwarang Hill

Hwarang Hill (Hwarang-ui Eondeok) is a themed public park in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, dedicated to the Silla-era Hwarang — the elite young-noble warrior-scholar corps that combined military training, Confucian and Buddhist ethical study, and cultural refinement into a distinctive institution that shaped Silla culture and produced many of the kingdom's most famous generals and cultural figures. The Hwarang tradition, active from roughly the 6th through 9th centuries CE, is one of the founding narratives of Korean cultural identity. The park combines interpretive plaques on individual famous Hwarang figures (Gwanchang, Sadaham, Kim Yushin among others), themed sculpture, walking paths through terraced landscaping, and viewing decks looking back toward central Gyeongju and the broader Namsan mountain that was central to Hwarang training. The setting on a hill outside the main Gyeongju historic district gives the park a quieter, more contemplative feel than the flagship UNESCO sites in the city center. Free entry.
