Why go

Iksan Godori Standing Stone Buddhas are a pair of 4.5-meter Goryeo-era stone Buddhas standing in a wide plain in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, facing each other across the open field about 200 meters apart. The pair is unusual in Korean Buddhist art — most stone Buddhas stand as single figures or trios in monastic compounds, not as facing pairs out in farmland. Local folklore explains the arrangement variously as a married couple, as guardians of a long-vanished temple, or as protective markers of an ancient road. Both figures show distinctive Goryeo-period carving style with simplified facial features and tall thin proportions. Free, accessible at any hour, about thirty minutes. Pair with Mireuksa or Wanggung-ri.
