Jeju International Peace Center

Jeju International Peace Center in Seogwipo, Jeju-do, is a public museum-and-conference complex dedicated to the Jeju 4·3 Incident memorial narrative and the broader Jeju international peace-diplomacy positioning. The Jeju 4·3 Incident (a devastating conflict on Jeju in 1948-1954 involving South Korean government forces and local residents that killed an estimated 30,000+ islanders) is one of the most difficult chapters of modern Korean history, and Jeju's post-2000s reconciliation-and-peace framing has positioned the island as a peace-oriented international destination. The center combines memorial exhibits on the 4·3 Incident (with detailed documentation of the events, survivor testimony, and the multi-decade truth-and-reconciliation process that culminated in the 2000 special law and official government acknowledgment), a conference facility that has hosted the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity since 2001, and interpretive exhibits on Jeju's broader international-peace positioning including UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Global Geoparks designations.
