Why go
Jeoksangsan is a 1,034-meter mountain in Muju, distinguished by a natural plateau that ringed historically by an 8-kilometer Joseon-era stone fortress wall (Jeoksangsanseong). The mountain's name ("red dress mountain") refers to the autumn maple color that engulfs the upper slopes in late October. The summit plateau holds the Anguk Temple, the historic Annals Archive site, and several small lakes. Reaching the upper plateau requires either a moderate three-hour hike from the lower lake or the seasonal monorail-cable car combination. Best in winter for snow scenery and autumn for the namesake red maples. Pair with Muju Resort and the wider Deogyusan National Park.
