Why go

Jeoksangsanseong is a high-elevation mountain fortress in Muju, Jeollabuk-do, perched at over 1,000 meters and ringing the upper plateau of Jeoksangsan with a roughly 8-kilometer stone wall. The fortress was extensively used during the Joseon dynasty as a high-altitude refuge during invasions, with food, weapons, and a copy of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty all stored within its walls during the Imjin War. Inside the wall today, the Anguksa Temple and a small visitor center preserve the historical thread. Reaching the wall requires a moderate hike from the lower lake or a short cable-car ride. Best in autumn for the surrounding maples. Pair with the Muju Resort and Tageosak observatory.
