Why go

Jumunjin Port is one of the East Coast's most historically significant working fishing ports in Gangneung, Gangwon, home to a substantial East Sea fishing fleet targeting squid (ojingeo), mackerel, pollock, and (in season) the celebrated East Sea daegu cod. The port has been continuously operating since the Joseon period as one of the main fishing ports of the northeastern Korean coast, and its early morning fish auctions (typically 3:00-6:00 in season) are one of the more atmospheric East Sea working-port experiences accessible to travelers. Around the port edge, casual seafood restaurants serve the day's catch in raw (hoe), grilled (gui), and stewed (jjigae) forms, and the surrounding market complex includes both wholesale and retail seafood sales through the day. Jumunjin is also cited as one of the filming locations of the K-drama "Goblin" (2016) — the drama's iconic breakwater scene was filmed at the Jumunjin Beach breakwater 5 minutes north of the port — which drew renewed tourism attention through the late 2010s and remains a common domestic-tourist stop. Free port access. Best at early morning for the auction atmosphere or at lunch/dinner for the port-side restaurants. Access: about 20 minutes from central Gangneung by car. Pair with the broader Gangneung East Coast cluster including Anmok Beach coffee street, Noam Tunnel (batch 10 verified media-art tunnel), Gangneung Ojukheon, and the Gyeongpo Beach (same-batch verified).
