Korea Bamboo Museum

Korea Bamboo Museum in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, is the dedicated public museum on bamboo — the plant that has shaped southern Korean material culture, cuisine, and landscape for centuries and that gives Damyang its position as Korea's most-cited bamboo cultural region. Damyang's Juknokwon Bamboo Forest and the surrounding bamboo cultivation heritage are the specific regional context that anchors the museum. The museum walks visitors through the botanical biology of Korean bamboo species, the traditional uses of bamboo in Korean domestic life (basketry, storage vessels, musical instruments, writing implements, construction), the cultural-symbolic role of bamboo in Korean literati tradition (bamboo as one of the Four Gentlemen of literati painting alongside plum, orchid, and chrysanthemum), and contemporary bamboo-craft and bamboo-cuisine (bamboo-rice, bamboo-tea, bamboo-shoot dishes).
