Why go
Korean National Police Heritage Museum in central Seoul is the dedicated public museum on the history of Korean policing, covering everything from late-Joseon constabulary forces through the colonial-era Japanese police, post-liberation South Korean policing, and modern Korean law enforcement. The collection includes original uniforms, period weapons, communication equipment, and substantial documentation on the police role across major Korean historical events — colonial-era resistance suppression, Korean War civil order, the April Revolution of 1960, the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, and modern democratization. Bilingual interpretation does not soften the more difficult chapters, particularly the colonial-era police role in suppressing the independence movement and the authoritarian-era police role in political repression — the museum's editorial framing acknowledges the institutional continuity and the complexity of writing the history honestly. Free entry. Allow about 90 minutes. Access: 5-minute walk from Seodaemun Station (Line 5, Exit 4). Pair with the broader Gwanghwamun area attractions — Gyeongbokgung Palace (10 minutes on foot), the Seodaemun Prison History Hall (5 minutes on foot, the site of colonial-era political imprisonment and one of the most difficult but essential Seoul cultural-history stops), and Gwanghwamun Square with its King Sejong and Yi Sun-sin statues.
