Why go

Beopjusa Temple in Boeun, Chungcheongbuk-do, is a major Buddhist monastery on the slopes of Songnisan and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea" inscription. The temple was founded in 553 CE during the Silla dynasty and houses several national treasures including the iconic 33-meter golden Maitreya Buddha statue (one of the largest standing Buddhist statues in Asia), the wooden five-story Palsangjeon hall (Korea's only surviving wooden multi-story pagoda), and several Goryeo-era stone artifacts. The compound is set in a valley of dense pine forest with the Songnisan peaks rising behind. Allow a half day. Bilingual interpretation. Best in autumn for surrounding maple foliage. Pair with Songnisan trails or the Jeongipum Pine Tree.
