Why go

Namwon Hwangsan Daecheopbi Site is the designated historic site of the Hwangsan Battle (September 1380) — the substantial military victory of the future King Taejo (then General Yi Seong-gye) over Wokou (Japanese pirate) forces, which substantially elevated Yi's political standing on the path to founding the Joseon dynasty in 1392. The site preserves the original battlefield landscape, a substantial Hwangsan Daecheopbi (Great Victory Stele, originally erected in 1577 to commemorate the battle), period documentation, and bilingual interpretation. Free entry. About 75 minutes. Pair with broader Namwon attractions like Gwanghallu Pavilion or Silsangsa Temple.
