Why go

Gyeongju Daereungwon Tomb Complex is the largest concentration of Silla-era royal tombs in central Gyeongju, set as the headline tomb park among the city's UNESCO Gyeongju Historic Areas. The complex contains about 23 large grass-covered tumuli scattered across a wide green park, including the famous Cheonmachong (Heavenly Horse Tomb) — the only excavated tomb that visitors can enter, where the namesake painted horse-saddle artifact and other royal grave goods were discovered. Other major mounds include Hwangnamdaechong (the largest tomb in the complex, double-mounded for a king-and-queen pair) and the more recently excavated Sweetbriar Tomb. The complex is set within an open landscaped park where the giant grass mounds dominate the view in every direction, making for some of Gyeongju's most-photographed landscapes. Best paired with Cheomseongdae and the Gyeongju National Museum.
