Why go
Maewoldang is a preserved Joseon-era literary-and-residential site in Korea, named after Maewoldang — the literary pen name of the Joseon-era poet-and-monk Kim Si-seup (1435-1493) — one of the most celebrated literary-and-intellectual figures of the early Joseon period and a key figure in the Saengyuksin ("six surviving subjects") faction that refused to serve Sejo of Joseon after his usurpation of the throne from his nephew Danjong. The site is preserved as a memorial to Kim Si-seup's legacy, with traditional Korean architectural detail and interpretive context. Kim's wandering scholar-monk life, his prose-and-poetry writings, and his role in the political-and-moral discourse of the early Joseon period have made him one of the most-cited literary figures of his era. Best for travelers interested in early Joseon literary history.
