Why go

Bongjeongsa Yeongsanam is a Buddhist hermitage (am) attached to Bongjeongsa, the major Buddhist mountain temple in Andong that is one of UNESCO Sansa Buddhist Mountain Monasteries of Korea (2018). Yeongsanam sits on the slope above the main Bongjeongsa compound and is renowned among Korean Buddhist scholars and visitors for the contemplative quality of its setting and architecture. The hermitage is a small wooden compound with a main meditation hall, side prayer space, and small monks' quarters, all wrapped by old-growth forest with a distinctive courtyard arrangement that integrates the surrounding landscape. The combination of the Bongjeongsa main complex and Yeongsanam hermitage gives visitors both the major temple-and-architecture experience and the more intimate hermitage-and-contemplation experience in a single visit. Best paired with the Bongjeongsa main complex.
