Why go
Muju Firefly Festival celebrates the rare populations of fireflies that still survive in the clean streams and forests of Muju in northern Jeollabuk-do — Muju has been designated by the government as a Firefly Reserve, the only one of its kind in Korea. The festival pairs serious environmental programming — habitat tours, night observation walks, lectures from researchers — with family-friendly summer events: water activities on the Geumgang tributaries, traditional games, and cool-mountain food stalls. Night programs are the centerpiece: organised observation routes inside protected zones let visitors actually see live fireflies, an experience that is increasingly hard to find anywhere on the peninsula.
