Located in the northern area of South Korea, Baengmagoji Battlefield was one of the bloodiest battlefields during the Korean War. The communist Chinese army launched a major offensive attack for 10 days on October 6, 1952 during the Battle of Baengmagoji, which can be translated into the Battle of White Horse Highlands. Due to this battle, the communist Chinese army suffered around 14,000 casualties and the army completely collapsed while the 9th Infantry Division won the Battle of Baengmagoji a
The Memorial Tower of Baengmagoji Battlefield and its accompanying museum stand near Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, commemorating one of the Korean War's most fiercely contested engagements. Baengmagoji — "White Horse Hill" — changed hands repeatedly during intense combat, and the site preserves that history through monuments, wartime artifacts, and documentary displays. Visitors gain a sobering perspective on the human cost of the conflict and the strategic significance of the Iron Triangle region. The location also situates travelers close to the DMZ, making it a meaningful stop on any Korean War heritage itinerary in Gangwon.
