Why go

Baengnyeonsa Temple in Muju is a small mountain monastery deep inside the Deogyusan National Park valleys, reached by a quiet 1.5-kilometer walking approach from the Gucheongdong tourist zone. The temple's name ("white lotus") refers to the Pure Land Buddhist tradition central to its founding, and the compound today combines a 17th-century main hall, a stone pagoda, and several smaller halls along a stream-cut shelf at the base of a ridge. The walk in is much of the experience — old pines, mossy boulders, and a clear stream — and the compound itself takes only about thirty minutes to view. Quietest on weekday mornings. Pair with the Gucheongdong valley falls and Deogyusan trails.
