Muju Gucheong-dong Special Tourist Zone

Muju Gucheongdong Special Tourist Zone is the official tourism precinct surrounding the Gucheongdong valley in Deogyusan National Park, encompassing the valley itself, Muju Resort (Korea's most respected mid-tier ski resort, host of the 1997 Winter Universiade), the Tageosak observatory, and the Hyangjeokbong cable car (which climbs to 1,522 meters, the second-highest peak in mainland South Korea). Designated a special zone for foreign-visitor convenience, the area aggregates accommodations, restaurants, and seasonal activities — rafting and stream walks in summer, skiing and snowboarding in winter, foliage tours in autumn, and firefly tours in early summer during the annual Muju Firefly Festival (a UNESCO-recognized natural heritage event held late June to early July). The zone is essentially the eastern Jeollabuk mountain hub, and most travelers base here for two nights to reach all the components. Best in winter for skiing (December-March), autumn for foliage (mid-October to early November), or early summer for the firefly festival. Pair with the broader Deogyusan National Park trails and the Jeoksangsan Historical Archives Site for a Muju cultural-and-nature day. Access from Seoul: about 3.5 hours by car via the Daejeon-Tongyeong Expressway.
