Why go

Myeongdong Theater is one of Seoul's most respected public theater venues, dedicated to contemporary Korean drama with a 600-seat main hall and a smaller experimental black-box. The venue hosts the National Theater Company of Korea's resident productions, original new plays by Korean playwrights, and seasonal traveling productions. The 1934 colonial-era building (originally the Meiji-za theater built by Japanese authorities) was carefully restored and reopened in 2009 as a public Korean theater venue — its preservation makes the architectural transformation itself part of the visit. Most plays are in Korean (English surtitles for selected productions). Pair with broader Myeongdong shopping and dining attractions.
