Why go
Noam Tunnel is a 130-meter pedestrian tunnel in central Gangneung, originally cut for a now-defunct rail line and converted in recent years (2019 opening) into a permanent media-art tunnel installation. Walking through, visitors are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling LED panels running rotating immersive scenes — coral reefs, cherry blossoms, starscapes, abstract color fields, seasonal ocean-themed content — synchronized with ambient sound. The piece changes seasonally (winter snow-and-aurora themes, summer coral-reef themes, spring cherry-blossom themes). The walk is short, about 8 minutes if you don't pause, but most visitors stay 20 to 30 minutes inside, since the visual environment makes time stretch and the immersive audio-visual composition rewards slow walking. Free, open year-round (typically 10:00-18:00). Best at off-peak hours (weekday mornings) when fewer people are inside the tunnel. Access: 15-minute walk from Gangneung Station (KTX terminus, connects from Seoul in about 2 hours). Pair with the Myeongju-dong cafe district (Gangneung's distinctive hillside cafe cluster), Gangneung Coffee Street (Anmok Beach coffee-shop cluster — Gangneung is Korea's most-cited coffee-tourism city), and the Gangneung Ojukheon (King Sejong's mother's birthplace) for a full Gangneung cultural-and-coffee day.
