Why go
Royal Portrait Museum (Eojin Bakmulgwan) is a public institutional museum in Jeonju dedicated to the Joseon-era royal-portrait tradition, set adjacent to Gyeonggijeon Shrine — the site that historically housed the official portrait of King Taejo of Joseon. The museum walks visitors through the Joseon royal-portrait tradition (eojin) including the technical-and-ceremonial aspects of royal portrait creation, the major surviving portraits of Joseon kings, the religious-and-political role of royal portraits in Joseon court culture, and the broader East Asian royal-portrait tradition. The collection includes original Joseon royal portraits and reproductions, period documents on portrait creation, and interpretive context. The museum is paired with Gyeonggijeon Shrine in physical-and-curatorial proximity, making it a natural anchor for any Jeonju visit. Best as a half-day stop combined with the Jeonju Hanok Village walking circuit.
