Seoul Center for National Intangible Cultural Asset

The Seoul Center for National Intangible Cultural Asset preserves and transmits Korea's designated intangible cultural properties — the specific master-craftsmen, master-performers, and specific technique traditions that the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration has officially designated as national intangible cultural heritage under the 1962 Cultural Property Protection Law. Located in Seoul's Gangnam-gu Samseong-dong district, the center offers visitors insight into traditional arts, crafts, and performance techniques that have been officially recognized as national heritage. The facility hosts exhibitions, demonstrations, and workshops where artisans and performers showcase practices ranging from classical music and dance (pansori, salpuri, seungmu) to pottery and textile arts (Onggi pottery, ottchil lacquerware, jogakbo patchwork), calligraphy, mask-dance drama, and shamanic ritual. Visitors can observe masters at work in scheduled demonstration slots, and sometimes participate in hands-on learning sessions (typically 60-90 minute programs with reservation). The center serves as both a cultural repository and an active teaching space for sustaining Korea's living traditions. Bilingual Korean/English interpretation on the main permanent exhibits.
