Sin Jae-hyo's House (고창 신재효 고택)
Sin Jae-hyo's House is a curated attraction in Korea — full details, hours, and access info on the official Korea Tourism page.
Why go
Sin Jae-hyo's House in Gochang is the preserved 19th-century residence of Sin Jae-hyo (1812–1884), the most influential pansori (Korean traditional storytelling-song) theorist and patron of his era. Sin systematized the six surviving pansori narratives that form the canon today and trained the first generation of female pansori singers, breaking what had been a male-only performance tradition. The compound preserves his living quarters, study, and a small archive of his original transcriptions, with bilingual panels covering his role in shaping pansori as we know it. Allow about forty-five minutes. Pair with Gochangeupseong Walled Town in central Gochang or Seonunsa Temple in the western county.
