Why go

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is a Joseon-era stone-and-earth fortress in central Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 as a representative example of late-Joseon military architecture. Built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo as the capital of his planned new royal capital, the fortress walls run approximately 5.7 km around the city's central core, with a series of sophisticated defensive structures including watchtowers (gakru), command pavilions (jangdae), the famous Hwaseomun and Janganmun gates, water-gates (Hwahongmun), and multiple bastions and arrow-slits. The fortress stands out for combining traditional Korean military-architectural traditions with contemporary 18th-century European military-engineering principles, and the engineering reflects the late-Joseon Korean state's most ambitious military project. Best given a half-day with a complete circuit walk along the walls.
