Unmunsan National Recreational Forest

Unmunsan National Recreational Forest is a Korea Forest Service-managed mountain forest in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on the slopes of Unmunsan mountain (1,188m). The forest is one of the more established national recreational forests in southeastern Korea, with a substantial network of trails ranging from gentle stream walks to a full summit ascent (about 5-6 hours round-trip), cabin and dormitory accommodations bookable through the Korea Forest Service portal (foresttrip.go.kr), and a working forest-school education center. The forest sits adjacent to Unmunsa Temple — a working Buddhist nunnery (bhikkhuni monastery) that has been continuously operating since the mid-Silla period (roughly the 6th century CE) and is one of Korea's most-cited nunneries. The temple-and-forest combination gives the site an unusual dual cultural-and-nature character, and many visitors combine the forest-stay with a Unmunsa Temple visit for a coherent day. Reservations for cabin nights are made 3 months in advance through the Forest Service portal. Best in autumn (mid-October to early November) for foliage. Access: about 30 minutes from Cheongdo town by car.
