Why go
Songgwangsa Temple in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, sits at the foot of Jongnamsan and is best known for the long ginkgo-and-maple-lined approach that turns golden in late October. Founded in the late 7th century, the temple has survived multiple cycles of destruction and rebuilding, with the current main wooden hall a 17th-century structure. The compound holds several national treasures including a stunningly preserved Buddhist relief and a 17th-century lotus throne. The setting is much quieter than its more famous Suncheon namesake — distinct temple, same name — and rewards visitors looking for a less-photographed Jeollabuk monastery. Allow ninety minutes. Pair with the nearby Wibongsa Temple and Daedunsan Provincial Park.
