Why go

Wibongsa Temple in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, is a 7th-century Buddhist monastery on the slopes of Jongnamsan, distinguished by its 17th-century wooden main hall — the Bogwang Hall — designated a national treasure for the rare "jusimpo" bracket-set roof system. The temple's compound is small but architecturally dense, with the main hall, a stone three-story pagoda, and several smaller halls all within a tight courtyard. The drive in from the lower valley road is itself a destination: a winding mountain road through dense forest with several scenic pullouts. Allow about an hour for the temple. Best in autumn when the surrounding maples peak in late October. Pair with Wibongpokpo Falls just down the trail.
