Why go
Yanggu Prehistory Museum in Yanggu, Gangwon, is the dedicated public museum on the Yanggu-area Paleolithic and Neolithic archaeological sites — Yanggu is one of Korea's more archaeologically significant regions for pre-history, particularly for its Paleolithic sites in the surrounding Punch Bowl basin (Haean Basin) that have yielded some of Korea's oldest stone-tool material dating back tens of thousands of years. The museum walks visitors through the Yanggu-area prehistoric record, from Paleolithic (~30,000-40,000 years ago) hand-axes and scrapers through Neolithic pottery, tool refinement, and settlement evidence, up to Bronze Age transition material. Life-size dioramas reconstruct prehistoric Yanggu-area coastal-and-forest life, and a substantial outdoor excavation-replica area shows visitors what the excavated sites actually look like in the field. Bilingual Korean/English interpretation. Free entry. Allow about 90 minutes. Pair with the Yanggu Unification Hall (batch 5 verified place), the Fourth Tunnel (one of the four discovered North Korean infiltration tunnels), and the Yanggu Peace Museum for a full Yanggu cultural-and-history day. Access requires travel to Yanggu (about 2 hours from Seoul by car via the Gyeongchun/central expressway network).
